Tackle Tough Separations. Wines, T.H. Chemical Processing December 2004, 31-37.
Reviews technologies to effect efficient separations of immiscible liquids with a focus on high-efficiency liquid-liquid coalescers.

Selecting Membrance Filtration Systems. Chen, W.; Parma, F.; Patkar, A.; Elkin, A.; Sen, S. Chemical Engineering Progress December 2004, 22-25.
Practical guidelines for choosing from available membrane materials, pore sizes and module configurations.

Understanding Flow Patterns in Glass-Lined Reactors. Dickey, D.S.; Bittorf, K.J.; Ramsey, C.J.; Johnson, K.E. Chemical Engineering Progress November 2004, 22-25.
Combining CFD simulation with actual models reveal flow patterns in glass lined vessels with a retreat curve impeller and single glass-lined finger baffle. The lack of significant effect of the baffle and the applicability of the physical model when modifications need investigating are the main conclusions.

Clarifying Centrifuge Operation and Selection. Norton, V.; Wilkie, W. Chemical Engineering Progress August 2004, 34-39.
Comparison of various centrifuge types for different applications and how to select the best one.

Real-World Modeling of Distillation. Taylor, Krishna and Kooijman. Chemical Engineering Progress July 2003, 28-39.
Discussion of how non-equilibrium (rate-based) models are overtaking equilibrium models in simulation software.

Separation Characteristics of Swirl-Tube Dust Separators. Peng, Hoffmann and Dries. AIChE J. 50, 87-96 (2004).
The performance of a simple cylindrical "swirl-tube" dust separator was compared to a tangential inlet cyclone and found to be comparable in pressure drop, grade efficiency curves and overall efficiency. Using the scaling rules and simple models, the swirl-tube is the more compact of the two designs when operated at similar values of the performance parameters.
