Preparation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)

Back to Home

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has mandated that Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) be available for all the hazardous materials and substances found in the workplace. Many business owners do what they can to comply but basically view it as a necessary evil. They often know somebody that can put something together or they pay somebody they find in an ad or on the internet, but how can they really be sure they are getting a good product?

One way is to use an experienced chemist who knows the requirements. I can take your formulas and pile of papers and turn them into a clear, understandable MSDS that complies with the American National Standard for Hazardous Industrial Chemicals - Material Safety Data Sheets - Preparation, ANSI Z400, 2005 Revision. This is the well-organized 16 section version that can actually be useful to employees and transportation workers. My expertise in searching the chemical literature, many reference works and access to academic libraries allows me to assemble a superior product to protect your employees and your business. I understand the OSHA regulations and the additional regulations by DOT, EPA, and other agencies that contribute to the content of the MSDS. You can read more about the content of an MSDS in my article on Preparation of MSDSs

When you call we'll discuss what information and documentation you already have and how much more we need. Typically you would need to provide:

  • Your company name, address, phone numbers, a 24-hr emergency phone number and any logo or artwork to appear in the company section.
  • Composition information, including percentages, raw material names, alternates, CAS numbers and any other identifiers you may have. If your product is a mixture, the MSDSs of each raw material would be very useful.
  • Physical property information you have on the product or mixture as well as any toxicological data you may have.
  • Previous MSDSs for this product if you have them.
  • A desired format for the finished document such as Microsoft Word (.doc) or PDF files for Adobe Acrobat Reader.

A typical 5-componet mixture costs only about $500. There are discounts for multiple documents or for several similar products. Stop wondering if your MSDSs are up to date or done right. Call me and know for sure.
